Not sure what to make of this movie except how true the title is. James McAvoy always has a pleasant, on-screen presence and after watching this, you’ll never see him the same again. There were a few laughs to splurt but this story just kept getting dirtier and dirtier.

There is an immense amount of themes and layers going on here, from fantastical fight scenes, to thought-provoking human struggles. This casserole of a film concerned me towards the end as I wasn't sure if all these elements could be tied together.

Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors and this could excel him onto higher planes of glory or show us that he bit off more than he could chew. The ending left me with excitement as I thought back about the journey but also speechless when I was processing everything that occurred. This movie is God damn good!

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

  • 2014
  • Drama
As I was reviewing this film in my mind, I wondered what this story was really about and realized it didn’t dive that deep. It’s a long journey about a lady’s obsession with sex and how it affected those around her. So why was I grossly disturbed by this movie but still very involved at the same time. The only answer I can think of is that there are repulsive scenarios on the surface but it also hits a chord with human nature. Even if that nature is the dark, underbelly of our primitive psyche.

The continuation of this dark, sexpic (sex epic) goes out with a bang. During the middle of the film, I was hoping for an explosive ending but not literally. I guess I just wanted something a bit more bright and possibly even touching. I couldn’t fully imagine the conclusion, but I knew it was going to be dark – it had to. I was shocked by the ending and immediately did not like it. However, deep down inside, I knew that ending was the right one to finish off this intellectually, raunchy, 4-hour ride.

The performances were not bad and the original film might have even benefited from some of these new details, but let me finish before you burn me at the stake. This was completely ruined by the direction and its new style. As with Miracle at St. Anna, Spike Lee manages to take a great story and turn it into an incredibly, dumbed-down film that you actually want to like, but cannot.

Things happen in this movie, then it’s referenced again through dialogue that spells everything out for you with corniness. We’re not idiots.

The performances are great, especially when people are sporting their guilty “oh shit” faces. The story isn’t something to marvel over, especially when the tension is set to ‘walk’. At the end, I realize it wasn’t about that, it was actually about the low-boiling, character development. If you’re expecting a thrilling drama or somebody freaking out, this won’t be your cup of tea.

I am taken by this visionary film. It has one of the smartest glimpse into the future, all the while telling a story that almost everyone in this day and age can relate to. The relationship between Joaquin Phoenix and his computer is one of the most poetic and romantic I've seen, even if it just verbally. Lastly, there is much more beneath the surface. Her raises questions about our views on technology and how intelligent machines behave when they become more than what they’re originally created for. Personally, this film hit all of my favorite points, including some comedy, and for that, it’s my favorite film of 2013.

It’s a shame that one of the worse movies of 2013 is a Ridley Scott production. The big name cast here is incredible and being Cormac McCarthy’s first screenplay, why wouldn’t we be amped for this. There is so much dialogue about things we don’t care about, things that don’t add to the story, and all delivered by a cast of blank characters. There is no ounce of backstory and no motive that we can relate to. I understand the gist of the concept but beyond that, it is a very confusing movie.

A lot of people are upset that Tom Hanks didn’t get a nomination for this. I can see why on both perspectives. Firstly, his performance is great but not throughout. I can never decide whether this is bad or good. I agree that if you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn’t worry about your privacy being peeped at, for the good of the country. On the other hand, this is your privacy and you have full rights to it. Then on another hand, if you’re worried about privacy, stay off of social networks that are free, because nothing is truly free. On a different perspective, okay, I’m going nowhere with this...

I feel the same way as everyone else who had a problem with Woody Allen’s Cecil B. Demille award at the 2014 Golden Globe. Yes, it’s unfair and unjust when thinking about Allen’s wreckless history, but you can’t say he doesn’t make good movies. Blue Jasmine is another example among many others. I especially liked this because it is so focused on Cate Blanchett and gives her so much room to evolve and erupt. One of her best characters I've seen.

The story is predictable but the way it’s told is a hell of ride, even if it is for 3 hours. I couldn't stop laughing during a 10-minute scene.

There have been mixed reviews on this about the nudity, which can sometimes be near pornographic; the constant drug use, and just the overall debauchery. If you’re sensitive to all that excess, you might walk out of this one. Otherwise, enjoy and laugh crazily.

Insidious: Chapter 2

  • 2013
  • Horror
  • Thriller
Maybe the concept was good when first introduced but to add onto it didn’t work out here. Even when I tried to put my guard down, this was difficult to have even a little fun with. The crazy dad part was dumb.

A slower paced, love struggle revolved around a Bonny and Clyde couple from the banjo strumming days. Beautifully shot and tragic.

The Butler

One of the better films about the civil rights movement from the 1950’s to our present day. This could also be used as an educational film for students studying the subject matter.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

  • 2013
  • Adventure
  • Fantasy
Taurial is a hot, badass elf, and you know this because she doesn’t look at her victims when she stabs them in the neck. It’s the nerd version of walking away from an explosion in slow-mo. And, Smaug sounds like really strong weed.
