You know the overall story of Stephen Hawking, but what about the life between him and Jane? The story doesn’t paint a glistening portrait of science-defying love, it draws out honest sketches. And, it does so with some extraordinary performances from both sides.

American Sniper

This is a raw look under the fog of war. It’s uncomfortable but nowhere near the likes of Full Metal Jacket. I appreciated the build-up of why Chris Kyle enlisted after 911 because that was a common thing for some Americans to do after the attacks. Once Kyle was deployed, the action started and it was intense, while showing us the other important duties of being a sniper. I don’t have balls big enough to go to war but if I had to, I would sure appreciate having a skilled sniper to watch over me. Definitely one of the top 3 films of 2014.

The type of acting where the performer totally transforms himself are the ones to marvel at, and Steve Carell nails it in such an uneasy and haunting manner. Mark Ruffalo proves what we already knew about his abilities. Channing Tatum, the one everybody snickered at when he first arrived in film is now something more than a beef bro. A fantastic experience to be had, but in the end, I did not care for the story.

The most unsettling character I have seen on film. Nightcrawler gets under my skin and lays eggs because Jake Gyllenhaal’s character reminds me of every sonavabitch I’ve had the displeasure of running into, living with, and working with. Being that bothered only means one thing – Gyllenhaal put on a grand performance.
