Oz the Great and Powerful

I liked the story and the beautiful spectacle of Oz. James Franco is hard to hate-on but I wanted to punch all of his teeth every time he showed them. The build-up to the plot’s main villain was a let-down. A lot of the annoyances has to be blamed on Sam Raimi. Pushing all the negativity aside, I did enjoy the film.

Iron Man 3

This doesn’t do anything new. More iron suits, new villains, and another psychological study of the gifted but troubled Tony Stark. But, that’s a good thing, because it’s still funny and explosively entertaining.

The Secret World of Arrietty

Another charmingly-beautiful film from Studio Ghibli. The only difference here is how innocent it is compared to others. Even Ponyo had a bit more of a mature edge to it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

All the beautiful and fantastical aspects of this lore is there, as you would expect. Even though it was very slow and nearly pointless in the beginning, it was a lot of fun. It would have been better to see more turmoil when these dwarves are in tight situations. Looking forward to the next one.

Life of Pi

Fantastic storytelling with a focus on religion, yet it does not force an agenda on you. Atheists, I guarantee you, it will be safe. I thought this was just going to be a beautiful movie about survival but the final plot twist left my family and I a lot to talk about. One of the best films of 2012.

The Bourne Legacy

Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) did a fine job as the action star but this does not have the intensely smart style of the previous Bourne films. The top secret group hunting Cross resemble a call center during peak hours. It’s not a good reboot, but it’s a good action movie.

Skyfall

This film is big but the action is not as over-the-top as your usual Bond movies. There is still a lot of great action, just don’t expect missile-firing cars doing barrel rolls off of ramps. In this case, that is a good thing. Sam Mendes nails it with a deeper 007 backstory while maintaining the intensity that would you expect.

Snow White and the Huntsman

The best thing about the original was its charmingly ridiculous style. Looks like the producers didn’t care for that and wanted a more serious and sexier reboot. Does it work? Nope. It’s not smart nor clever enough to take the original’s crown, but it does have some cool, high-tech, Sci-fi stuff if you just want to see rad shit.

Wrath of the Titans

All of the cringing moments come from the dialogue and there's a whole lotta talking. This is an aerial combat movie but the script will not shut up long enough to let us take in the intensity of warring skies. Red Tails was done with little authenticity to the time period and in some cases, downright disrespectful to history. Shoot this one down.

John Carter

The Avengers

If you haven't heard by now how much fun this movie is or how it broke the $1 billion mark in its second week, it's all true and it delivers on the hype. Superhero movies have been great because directors and writers are able to instill drama into them that is believably human.

Joss Whedon does it on grand scale with multiple egos, and yet, every character is given ample screen time to voice their cause and resistance. Yearly 'top 10' films are usually reserved for hard-hitting dramas with highly emotional performances but I think The Avengers deserves a spot.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Some critics are so upset that Holmes has turned into a crime-fighting, action ninja. Hollywood is going to give a face lift to every franchise they can get their hands on and we can't stop it. All we can do is hope that the movie is decent and fun, in which case, this was.

The Grey

Going into this film, I was expecting a typical survival action thriller. To be fair, it is all those things, except typical. Sure, there are cheesy one-liners and guys being guys during a crisis but there's also more depth. The Grey has a poetic undertone of doing whatever it takes to survive or peacefully accepting death when there's no where else to go.

Hugo

This film is beautiful, imaginative, colorful, and wholesome. There is a lot of computer-generated graphics here but it's used in a highly tasteful way that compliments the film, not distract you from it. The story and its message isn't deep but it's well-told. This is one of those of movies that everyone, of all ages, can enjoy – and should.

Puss in Boots

Green Lantern

I love Sci-fi, aliens, and all that nerdiness but man, this film is ridiculous. Movies like X-Men: First Class, Thor, or Iron Man, give nerds a better reputation. Green Lantern just reminds everyone how embarrassing being a nerd can be.

Like other superhero movies, you will have some fun with this. It's not boring at all, it's just very average. The only thing that was above average was Sinestro, played by Mark Strong.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Paul Giamatti is his usual awesome self while all the other less popular actors go around screaming and cutting people up. It's a straight forward, medieval, hack-and-slash flick with a lot of gore. Not really worth watching unless you're a big Giamatti fan, like ugly damsels, or you get a boner for all the bloody Braveheart scenes.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Rio

X-Men: First Class

There were a few parts that made me laugh out loud and I don’t mean that in a good way. The developing relationships seemed rushed but have to be forgiving to that because there are so many characters. The most important relationship between Professor X and Magfassbender was the highlight of it all. This new reboot definitely outdoes the older ones.

Sidenote: Whoever decided to have the Nazi coin turn into the X-Men badge is a dumbhead.

Rango

I really loved all the visual details of the animals. It magnified their character's personality so well and it was fascinating to watch them interact with each other. I enjoyed the jokes and even at some parts, things get a little dark but it never lost its charm. However, this film has a very different vibe from all the other big animated movies that we're used to.

Get Lord of the Rings high and throw in every Medieval-fantasy cliche you can think of and you got this movie. It is funny and there were some great moments but am I a jerk for expecting it to be way funnier? Surprisingly my stoner friends didn't find it that funny either. 2010 was a good year for movies and True Grit is one of those titles to backup that statement.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

I had a blast with this. There was a ton of video game references and funny lines. Although the story is incredibly linear, I find it nice for a change. No twisted plots and no surprises – just a dude trying to win a girl's heart.
